Over the past few years social media has become integral to our lives and I have to say that for the majority of the time I love it and always up for trying new ones that come out, catch me on Twitter, Vine, Instagram, Linked In,Pinterest and the list goes on but then last year I kind of fell out with Facebook!! Not sure why really but I just found that I would go on there and just get annoyed with it or more to the point the people posting inane stuff! Either boosting about there amazing life or moaning about their not so amazing life and yes I could have un-friended people but it felt deeper than that, I didn’t think that it was adding to my life & if I wanted to speak to friends there were plenty of other methods of communications that worked & actually were more personable!!
So in November I deleted my account and if i’m honest I don’t miss it at all. And it turned out to be a bit of a social experiment when I got panic text from friends wondering if I’m OK as I’d disappeared off Facebook. I guess we can all be guilty of being a bit lazy when it comes to staying in touch with friends so Facebook is a good way to check in on people. I’d heard the comment “Oh I know you’re OK as I saw your FB posts!!” I wonder what the percentage of posts that people post are actually true!?!?
Anyway, a month after my FB deletion I fell upon another social network called Happier. https://www.happier.com – online as well as a smart phone app.
The premise of this social media site is similar to most of the others around that you post things, you follow people and people follow you!! There is ONE big exception – you only post things that make you smile!! What is there not to love about this?! Especially when there is science behind it too: https://www.happier.com/science
Every time you post something you get confetti falling down your screen and the more times you post each day you get different graphics to reward you for your smile. You can post just words or a picture too and also tag people into your post if they are part of your happy moment. I’m finding the more happy moments I share, the more I notice!! This can only be a good thing.
When you hit major happy moment milestones you get rewarded with more confetti.
Once you post something, the people who are following you can smile if it made them smile, comment on the post and even sort of forward it if they feel that it’s something that makes them smile too, you get notifications when there is a smile or comment. I’ve connected to so many people from all over the globe and it’s awesome!! The love and support I’ve received from what are complete strangers has helped me get through some not so good days! Everyone i’m connected to is so supportive & there just when you need them. There have been days when I’ve not felt like posting anything but still gone on to the app and read other people’s happy moments which is a great way to start a day or if you’re having a low moment.
There is notification screen just like in other social networks and if you are lucky one of your happy moments is put on the featured tab which means people who aren’t following you can see your moment. This has happened to me a couple of times and it’s a great buzz to see that the team at happier recognise your post as something that will make other people smile.
Each day there is a daily challenge for you do and also happier tips and a daily inspirational quote
The team also periodically produce word clouds to celebrate your happier moments, which is lovely to receive and see.
I am totally in love this this social media site and feel it’s a breath of fresh air in the world where negativity, doom and gloom often rears it’s ugly head. You can also sign up to their happier course (£17.49 for a 21 day course). I haven’t done this yet but plan to later this year.
Recently I’ve just reached my 300th happier moment in just under 3 months and plan on sharing my happier moments with my newly found happier buddies.
